Supplements I Take While Trying to Conceive [And Why I Take Them]

Trying to conceive my second baby has become one of the most trying experiences of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love bonding with my boyfriend and enjoying my one-on-one time with my almost 6-year old daughter. However, I piece of my heart is missing. My heart is simply not complete without another sweet baby. Every month that AF (click here to find out what that and other abbreviations mean) arrives, I mourn the loss of a baby that never was. 

At the time of writing this, I’m in my sixth cycle trying to conceive. I know to some that amount is just a drop in the bucket, but it doesn’t stop me from wanting to increase my chances of conception for this cycle and future cycles (hopefully not too many more, if not the cycle I’m on currently). One of the ways to increase your fertility is by taking supplements. Of course, what works for one person may not work for the other. I’m not pregnant yet, so this could all be for ‘nothing’ (and by nothing, I mean, not the intended effect; IE: baby). At the very least, taking these supplements will provide me with vitamins and nutrients that will help me become healthier.

1. FertilAid for Women – This is one of the newer supplements that I have added to my regime. After reading rave reviews on Amazon and BabyCenter, I decided to give it a go. One of the things that appealed to me the most was that it is an all-in-one formula, meaning that it also includes full prenatal vitamin support which is vital to have before you even get that BFP. It also promotes hormonal balance, enhances fertility, and supports overall reproductive health. 

2. CoQ10 – This is also a new supplement that I’ve added to my regime. CoQ10 is a vitamin-like supplement that functions as an antioxidant. It helps with decreasing the damaging effects of free radicals on the reproductive system and increases ATP production in the egg cells. It also improves egg quality. 

3. Vitamin B6 – I’ve been taking b6 for the past few cycles. According to many sources, it is one of the most important vitamins to take while trying to conceive. It regulates hormones and can lengthen your luteal phase. Additionally, it can increase cervical mucus, which is extremely important when TTC since the sperm needs to travel in an environment that protects it through it’s journey towards the cervix. 

4. Prenatals – While FertilAid does include full prenatal vitamin support, I am still taking the minimum dose of my prenatal vitamins. Prenatal vitamins are crucial to conception and pregnancy alike. Did you know that just by taking prenatal vitamins that you are increasing your odds of conceiving? Prenatals provide you with all the vitamins and nutrients needed to sustain a healthy pregnancy and prevent birth defects. It is suggested to take prenatals before pregnancy is even confirmed.
